Two car guys disillusioned with the car business founded Road Scholars in May of 2000. The frustration we had with the car business was not with the products, but with the sales process. Russell Fleury spent over twenty years training automobile manufacturers and salespeople how to sell their products. Kevin Watts had 10 years in the sales end of the business, primarily with Porsche. Ironically, he attended many of Russell’s product training classes. We set out to do business differently, selling only the highest quality cars, in a manner befitting the potential owners of those cars.
We realized early on how lucky we are to be able to play with cars all day — as young kids we dreamed of this. As we built Road Scholars, our focus was on finding and providing only the finest examples of the Porsche brand. We were determined not to succumb to the high pressure environment and high volume approach that is so prevalent in this business. The car buying process hasn’t changed since the old horse trader days of the 1800s. You are a car nut like us (or you wouldn’t be reading this), and you have gone through the grinding back and forth of buying a car. The Internet was supposed to change all of this, but in reality may have made it worse. How can a prospective buyer possibly sort through the vast variety of cars available for sale? How can anyone be sure of the quality, authenticity, and provenance of what they are investing in?
At Road Scholars, quite simply, we have the experience and the focus on quality examples of the Porsche marque that provides exactly that assurance. Our bench marks are rarely achieved by others and are constantly moved higher with each and every car we touch. From impeccably detailed originals to perfectly restored concours winners, Road Scholars is continually resetting the bar in the air cooled Porsche market. The Porsche Club of America is our judge, and they seem to like what they see. Four times at annual Porsche Parade our cars have scored over 295 points out of 300, along with many first in class wins.
Russell stepped aside in 2005 and Cam Ingram stepped in as the new “Road Scholar.” Cam’s knowledge of the 356 series, as well as his restoration experience, moved Road Scholars in a new direction, restoration. Under Cam’s watchful eye for the details, the caliber of cars that we restore and offer have become the gold standard for vintage Porsche’s.
