After a year off, the Porsche 911 Turbo returned for 1991 with all the 964-series improvements, plus a fortified 3.3-liter flat-six with larger inter cooler, a bigger but faster-acting blower, and a new low-restriction exhaust system. Road & Track reported a mere 4.8 seconds 0-60 mph and a blistering 12.9-second quarter-mile — the best ever for a showroom Porsche, and almost on par with the exotic 959.

In 1972, a total of 12,962 Porsche 911s were produced. Of those, only 2,739 were the higher horsepower “S” model, and of those, only 1,750 were Coupes, fewer yet were Sunroof Coupes.

Some say that the 1972 Porsche was the last of the “no compromises” Porsche. It is the only year Porsche manufactured the oil filler on the outside, behind the passenger door and the oil tank in front of the right rear wheel to maximize the overall balance and weight distribution of the car. The fuel filler was on the left front fender. In 1972, gasoline station attendants filled your gas tank, cleaned your windshield, among other services performed. Unfortunately, many attendants were not familiar with Porsche then and used the oil filler as a receptacle for gasoline. An event that Porsche did not anticipate when they engineered the well balanced “no compromise” 1972 model. Needless to say, this well intended engineering concept disappeared for 1973 and forever after, leaving the 1972 unique to this feature.

This particular car is the 911S and has the following equipment as standard; front spoiler, front oil cooler, “S” gauges (7200 Red Line Tach) 6X15 Alloy wheels. The following equipment were extra cost options; Metallic Silver paint, sunroof, through the horn grille fog lights. This information was confirmed in a letter from the Factory in Germany, signed by Jurgen Barth.

“I purchased the 911S from the original owner, a retiring Physician (Dr. Homer Ericson) in Kokomo, Indiana, on August 10, 1988, almost 25 years ago. I first became aware of the car in February 1988, when I was the President of the Chicago Region of the Porsche Club of America. The car was advertised in Indiana Region club newsletter. However, February, 1988, Chicago had a record snowfall of about 18 inches. Kokomo was out of the travel question.

In May, I called to see if the car was still available. I spoke to Dr. Homer Ericson, the original owner of the car. He said that it was but he wanted to wait until the first of next year when he planned to retire before selling it. We agreed that I would stay in touch every month or so. In August, I called and asked if I could come and see the car and determine if it was the “right one”, and if so, give him a deposit to seal the deal. I called a friend and we made a road trip. One look and I knew. Offered to give him a deposit and then came the surprise. He asked if I would like to take the car that day. Made arrangement with my bank and the transaction was completed. Before leaving, Dr. Ericson said that he had two sons each of which wanted the car. The only solution to prevent a family war was to sell the car. TIMING IS EVERYTHING!!”

Dr. Homer Ericson is still a Porsche guy and drives a Boxster at 81 years old. He confirmed that he sold the car in 1988 with 40,000 miles. It was his daily driver for over eight years. Upon the purchase of a new car, he had the 911S repainted in its factory metallic silver. Otherwise, it’s an all original car and drives like a time warp.

Scott Ericson’s (Son of Dr. Homer Erikson) history of VIN: 9112300697
“I am Dr. Ericson’s son. spent my childhood in it and can tell you exactly how it was cared for and driven. (All good) wish I could afford to buy it back into the family. I can tell you detail on the refinish job.

I believe Dad went down to Indy and told the dealer he wanted an S, with a sunroof; and the sales manager told him he’d just got one for his wife. didn’t have another. They took her car away from her and the sales manager found her something else.

I rode to Indy with him many times to get the car serviced, and we would stop at Steak and Shake for lunch. There was no Steak and Shake in Kokomo.

The car was painted because the light shone in the garage only part of the day and the paint on the back of the car was starting to sun-fade a bit. It was taken apart to paint it and some rust was found on the front fenders. they were replaced with new Porsche fenders at great cost. I believe the sunroof was even removed for the paint work. It was shot in Westfield at the shop of a local street rod wizard. I can get his name. to this day, I’ve never seen better looking silver paint.

Dad religiously cleaned the engine with Shell or Gunk engine cleaner, and then washed it down. vivid memories of the smell. He was under the car now and then with VHT heat paint spritzing the heat exchangers because of concerns about rust.

Car was never in a collision. Never towed. Don’t think it even spent a night outside the garage. Was taken to IRP and run a couple times at PCA track days. I was crushed because I was too young to ride in it on the track. Dad once commented that he got it loaded up pretty good in a corner and the windshield squirters started to dribble from the g forces.

Only problem it ever had was a bad tach. which made the car miss-fire and run poorly. He either replaced it or had it reworked. Can’t remember. Fantastic car.”

1972 Porsche 911S facts and specifications:
The Porsche 911 lineup consisted of three models in 1972. The 911T, 911E and 911S all of which were available in coupe and Targa body styles.

The 911T was the entry level model. The E had a bit more horsepower and more luxury features while the 200 hp S was the car for weekend racer.

After a little-changed group of 1971 D-Series models came the E-Series Porsche 911s for 1972, with further increases in both displacement and wheelbase. A longer stroke (to 70.4 mm, up 4.4 mm) on an unchanged bore took the flat-six to 142.9 cid/2341cc, though engine-lid badges optimistically stated “2.4″ liters. Wheelbase lengthened a mere 3 mm to 89.4 inches (2271 mm), a change that has never been explained.

The extra displacement stemmed from Porsche’s desire to maintain performance against the fast-stiffening U.S. emission standards. California, still requiring lower pollutant levels than other states, mandated that all cars be operable on low-lead 91-octane gasoline beginning with model-year 1972
Porsche also lowered compression for ’72, but the greater displacement more than offset it. In fact, all three engines showed useful output gains, so Porsche 911 performance scarcely suffered. The specifics:

911T — 130 DIN horsepower European (157 SAE) at 5,600 rpm, 7.5:1

911E — 165 DIN horsepower European (185 SAE) at 6,200 rpm, 8.1:1

911S — 190 DIN horsepower European (210 SAE) at 6,500 rpm, 8.5:1

These figures weren’t very different from those of Porsche 911s sold in Europe (which would soon enact its own emissions standards).

In 1972 a tremendous effort was made to improve the handling of the 911. Due to the 911′s unusual engine placement (rear-mounted, with most of the vehicle’s weight concentrated over the rear axle) early 911′s were prone to over steer when driven at the limit, and could easily spin in the hands of an inexperienced driver. In an attempt to remedy this, Porsche relocated the oil tank from its position behind the right rear wheel to in front of it. This had the effect of moving the weight of almost 9 quarts of oil from outside the wheelbase to inside, improving weight distribution and thus, handling. To facilitate filling of the oil tank, Porsche installed an oil filler door (much like the fuel filler door on the left front fender) on the right rear quarter panel. Unfortunately, this unique design was scrapped after only one year, some say because inattentive gas station attendants were putting gas in the oil tank. The oil tank was subsequently moved back to its original position for model year 1973, and remained there until it was moved back within the wheelbase for the 964 models.

911S models also gained a discreet spoiler under the front bumper to improve high-speed stability.
With the car’s weight only 1050 kg (2315 lb), these are often regarded as the best classic mainstream 911 model.

This 930 Slantenose Targa is completely original with only 19,000 miles on the odometer. It’s 1 of 9 built in 1987, and the factory only built 31 examples total. The original paint and red interior are in exceptional condition. It is a two owner car with all its service books and tool kit. This represents a truly great investment opportunity for a rare original car that can be driven and enjoyed.

Porsche Slantnose facts and specifications:
The Porsche 930 was built between 1975 and 1989, and was known to the public as the 911 Turbo. It was the Porsche’s top-of-the-range 911 model for its entire production duration and at the time of its introduction the fastest production car available in Germany.
Porsche offered a “Flachbau” (“slantnose”) 930 under the “Sonderwunschprogramm” (special wishes program) beginning in 1981. The slantnose was a 935 aerodynamic inspired replacement for the otherwise normal 911 front end. Each slantnose unit was handcrafted at the Porsche factory’s Werks One building.

Porsche re-introduced the 930 to the Japanese and U.S. markets in 1986 with an emission-controlled engine producing 278 hp. At the same time Porsche introduced Targa and Cabriolet variants, both of which proved popular.

1987 was the first year that the slantnose became available as an option for all 911 models. Option 505 retailed for $23,000 on whatever style 911 you chose to order it on. Factory Turbo Targas are rare, and slantnose varients even rarer. In 1987, only nine Factory Turbo Targa Slantnose’s were delivered. Porsche would only build 31 slantnose targa’s in total.

944 Turbo (951/952)
For the 1985 model year Porsche introduced the 944 Turbo, known internally as the 951. This had a turbocharged and intercooled version of the standard car’s engine that produced 220 PS at 6000 rpm.
In 1987, Car and Driver tested the 944 Turbo and achieved a 0-60 mph time of 5.9 seconds. The turbo was the world’s first car using a ceramic port liner to retain exhaust gas temperature and new forged pistons and was also the first vehicle to produce identical power output with or without a catalytic converter.
The Turbo also featured several other changes, such as improved aerodynamics, a strengthened gearbox with a different final drive ratio, standard external oil coolers for both the engine and transmission, standard 16 inch wheels (optional forged Fuchs wheels), and a slightly stiffer suspension (Progressive springs) to handle the extra weight. Major engine component revisions, more than thirty in all, were made to the 951 to compensate for increased internal loads and heat.

“Turbocharging is a way of life at Weissach. If a blower can possibly be bolted onto a Porsche engine, it will be—at the earliest opportunity. In the case of the 944, the 1986 model year is your cue to celebrate life on the plus side of the manifold-pressure gauge.

Of course, the 944 Turbo is fun, fast, and frightfully expensive. Attacking that list in reverse order, the price just barely clears our #30,000 ceiling, a stretch of your right leg will carry you to 157 mph, and the only activities that are more entertaining than driving this car demand a live partner.

Where does this leave the regular 944? The truth of the matter is that most of us at Car and Driver prefer it to the Turbo for everything but flat-out, high-speed, get-me-to-the-church-on-time pursuits. The standard 944 has better throttle response and its steering feels sharper on center.

Furthermore, the normally aspirated 944 is about the best sports-car value going. This is more true than ever for 1986, because Porsche has seen fit to give this machine several new suspension components and a new instrument panel (both of which were developed for the Turbo) without raising the price a smidgen. All of which makes one wonder what exactly Porsche has in mind for next year.”

Ruf Automobile introduced the 3400S in late 1999, as their first vehicle based on Porsche’s then-new Boxster. Unlike Ruf’s 911 based offerings, which usually feature new lightweight body panels, the 3400S was centered mainly on an engine-swap.
Porsche was still offering only one version of the Boxster in ’99, with a 2.5 liter, 200 horsepower flat-six as the only available power plant. Ruf techs would remove the factory engine, replacing it with a lightly tuned version of Porsche’s 3.4 litre, 310 horsepower flat-six from the early 996 generation 911.

In order to properly handle the new engine, structural modifications were made to the Boxster chassis, both to allow for the engine’s physical mounting and to help make the platform more rigid, giving it better handling to go along with the added power output. Larger brakes, GT3 front bumper, sports exhaust, a Ruf-spec suspension system and new aerodynamics rounded out major changes, while larger Ruf wheels with more aggressive tires helped increase grip. GT3 Sport Seats and a 911-instrument package with five dials instead of three complete the Ruf custom interior.

RUF 3400S Review

“The Porsche Ruf Boxster 3400S is a revelation. Mixing the 911′s more powerful engine with the Boxster’s lighter chassis is a sure way for exciting performance. This is accomplished by shoehorning a water-cooled 3.4 litre 911 engine into the Boxster. The resulting machine is one of the most exciting cars with Porsche DNA.

On the Ruf Boxster there is 19-inch wheels which carry 235/35ZR19 tires up front, 275/30ZR19s in the rear. The 0-60 mph sprint takes just 5.0 seconds, the 100 mph marker falls in 11.5 seconds, the Boxsters top speed is 175 mph. The Ruf Boxster 3400S is totally focused on driving pleasure and is one of the best sports cars in the world.

Fire-up the 3400S and the sports seats suddenly seem less ridiculous. The re-worked exhaust resurrects the raspy, aggressive bark cherished by devotees of the air-cooled 911. The sound is both nostalgic and addictive. It’s a little strange to be blipping the drive-by-wire throttle of a Boxster- a car continually criticized for not being “a real Porsche”- hearing noises that make standard Carreras sound like automotive castrati.
Snick the Boxster’s six-speed into first, press the loud pedal, release the clutch and things get even stranger. The 3400S rockets forward with unrestrained zeal. When the 310hp engine hits its sweet spot, at around 3500rpms, it pulls with supercar ferocity. The surround-sound wail hardens, and the thing just gets up and goes.
The numbers tell the tale. Zero to sixty in 5.1 seconds. Rest to 100 mph in 12.4. Compared to the Boxster S- itself no slouch- the 3400S is almost a full second faster to sixty, and 2.2 seconds quicker to the ton. The RUF car finally runs out of steam at an astounding 171mph.”

We have been fortunate enough to acquire this very special 911 back recently. Kevin and I found this car five years ago and sold it to one of our friends. It’s a two owner car with just 44,000 miles on the odometer. The second owner only put 900 miles during his stewardship. Needless to say, this is still the best original early 911 that we have every bought and sold (and we have had some pretty special examples). Please read the incredible story of 119100136 below.

Rarely on a wild goose chase for Porsche’s do cars turn out as advertised, but every once in a while you get lucky. Such was the case when we heard about the all-original 1969 911T seen here.

The original owner, Fred Meyer (who spent most of his career as a Porsche sales person), told us that he is getting on in age. The arthritis in his hands was affecting his ability to keep his pride and joy perfect, as he had for the last 40 years.

While waiting for Fred to open his garage, I could not help but notice his 1988 VW Rabbit GTI. Glancing at the car I said to Cam, my business partner, “who would put Michelin Pilots on a Rabbit?” The more I looked at it, the more amazed I was with the overall condition of the car. It had original paint, a pristine interior, and only 88K showing on the clock. Holy cow what a Rabbit! As the garage door opened I told Cam, “If this 911 is half as good as the Rabbit, I’m buying it.”

The yellow coupe we saw when the garage opened was ordered in the summer of 1968 just the way you would expect a Porsche salesman to order one, with all the goodies. This 911T is one of only 349 long wheelbase cars produced at the Werks One factory at the start of 1969 production.

This is a special car, not only the best original we have ever seen, but also the best documented. The options on the car are simply stunning. Starting with the special order Canary Yellow paint, this 911 is unreal, the paint near flawless. Fred also ordered sport seats, but due to production problems the car was delivered without them. The problem was easily remedied by taking the seats out of another car on the lot before delivery and paying $99 more.

Being an insider with Porsche, he discovered that the very early 1969 911s had an alignment dowel in the engine case slightly too large, causing the engine cases to crack. Porsche remedied this problem by replacing the engine just 10 days after delivery with the upgraded fix. The Kardex makes note of this change with the date and new engine number. We have never seen this before!

The car also has the Radio Prep Package. One of Fred’s old buddies was the Blaupunk rep in Southern California and gave him a new AM/FM that still remains.

The rubber on the car for the window seals, etc. is all original and in better condition than any new part we have seen because of his little trick: rubbing Xerox copier oil on the seals! They have been incredibility preserved, without even the slightest cracks. The interior of the car is crazy! Not a mark anywhere on the dash, seats, carpet, door panels, or visors. Absolutely amazing.

This is an incredibly well-documented 911, both with service records as well as period photos. Squires Autowerke in Bellevue, WA serviced the car for many years, and with only 42,000 miles the engine needed nothing when we inspected it. While flipping through the photos we found a picture of the 1973 Porsche Parade in Monterrey. The photo reveals a Class and Division win, with the award being presented by Ferry Porsche himself. When you are going through the pictures you find many period modifications, such as engine grill painted black(very common early 70′s still on the car), polished and painted Fuchs, body colored mirror, additional different wheels, solo air cleaners, and more. Thankfully, Fred had kept every original part.

Fred is truly an enthusiast and will tell you that the only reason the car is in this condition is because he is cheap and keeps all his things impeccable. I’ll tell you that Fred is a perfectionist. He won the Griot’s Preservation Award at the 2006 Porsche Parade, and needs to be thanked by all of us Porsche enthusiasts for a job well done. Fred shows us how to truly enjoy a 40-year relationship with the “other woman” by driving her, regularly servicing her, and showing her off with friends and fellow Porsche enthusiasts. He has preserved her to a standard never seen. I’m thankful for people like Fred. He has preserved history, and while history repeats itself, this particular special car will never be duplicated.

1969 Porsche 911 facts/specifications:
1969 brought the first substantive changes to the Porsche 911 lineup which now consisted of three models, the 911T, 911E and 911S.

In 1969 the B series was introduced: the wheelbase for all 911 and 912 models was increased from 2,211 to 2,268 millimeters (87.0 to 89.3 in), an effective remedy to the car’s nervous handling at the limit. Porsche also flared the wheel arches allowing wider tires to be fitted.

The T was the base model but was the most tractable and quite adequate for street use with 125 horse power.

This 1973 911 was special ordered and delivered to Central Porsche/Audi in Wichita, Kansas. The original owner kept the car until just last year when she sold it to the second owner. She is still alive and has confirmed the history/details on this special 911.
It was ordered with many options (listed above) and the exterior paint is completely original with only 80,435 miles on the odometer.
The front seats have just had the proper hounds tooth inserts installed, otherwise it’s a all original interior as well. The car comes with extensive service documentation and even the original window sticker. This is a rare opportunity to acquire a no stories early 911 with some very cool options.

1973 Porsche 911 facts and specifications:
The Targa features a stainless steel-clad roll bar, as Porsche had, at one point, thought that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) would outlaw fully open convertibles in the US, an important market for the 911. The name “Targa” (which means “shield” in Italian) came from the Targa Florio sports car road race in Sicily, Italy in which Porsche had notable success.

The 1972–1973 model years consisted of three models of 911; the entry level T, the mid range E and the top of the line S. However, all models got a new, larger 2,341 cc (2.341 L; 142.9 cu in) engine. This is universally known as the “2.4L” engine, despite its displacement being closer to 2.3 liters. This is perhaps to emphasize the increase over the 2.2 L from the previous generation 911 power plant. The new 911T power plant produced 130 hp.

In January, 1973, US 911Ts were switched to the new K-Jetronic CIS (Continuous Fuel Injection) system from Bosch. These CIS-powered cars are usually referred to as “1973.5″ models by enthusiasts. The Sportomatic transmission was still available but only as a special order in 1973.

This RSR has received a new paint freshening in the factory livery white, Firnweiss (Z1Z1).

This RSR has lived a good life and has only had four owners since new:

Of the four owners, only Sobrero did any significant competing in the car. Otherwise this RSR was used for open track days.

The motor was rebuilt by Precision Motorwerks, Anaheim, CA. This was done by Mr. Frankel. The Motec engine logging shows approximately 10 hours of running time.

The car retains the original aluminum hood. It has a fuel cell, fiberglass doors, set up for radio communications and camera recording. There is no radio or video recorder in the car.

-Motec engine management system and dash.

-Air jacks and includes 1 air jack wand.

-A Recaro upgraded Hans seat has been added.

-The shocks have been upgrade to Moton gas adjustable.

-An onboard fire system and cool shirt cooler has been installed.

-The gearbox shifts smoothly in all six gears.

-The clutch disc would have been replaced at the time of the engine rebuild. It performs as intended.
